NOVEMBER 2017: Called to be a Servant

Our Disciple Now weekend had a great impact in the lives of our students. Over the weekend, students learned from scripture that we aren't simply called to serve, but we are called to be servants. More than thinking of serving as an action verb, we should think of it as word that describes our lives. We are commanded in scripture to have the attitude of a servant. Philippians 2 tells us we should have the attitude of Christ, and Christ humbled himself and became a servant. In order to have the attitude of Christ and serve like him, we first must understand the way he served us by dying on the cross for our sins. As we trust in Him and surrender our hearts to Him, the Spirit of God begins to transform our hearts, minds, and wills to become more like Jesus. As we draw closer to Christ, we can begin to love and serve people the ways Jesus loves and serves people.

All followers of Christ are called to be servants. We serve others by humbling ourselves and thinking of the needs of others. We serve others by sacrificially setting ourselves aside for the good of others. We serve others by loving people well and showing them compassion. The word compassion means "to suffer with" those who are in need. We love the least, the last, the lost, and even our enemies.  We show love to everyone that God has placed around us in our sphere of influence. We serve fellow believers by using our spiritual gifts, time, talents, and resources to build up and encourage the body of Christ in our local church. Serving others in the church includes praying for one another, encouraging each other in the Lord, spurring one another on to faith and good deeds, bearing each others burdens, showing hospitality, holding each other accountable, sharpening each other as iron sharpens iron, and meeting the needs of one another. Another great way we can be a servant in the Kingdom of God is by proclaiming the gospel message to those who do not have a relationship with Jesus.

Imagine the impact we would have in our homes, our neighborhoods, our work places, our church, and our city if we all took on the attitude of being a servant!  Pray today and ask God to mold you into a humble servant.  There are many opportunities over the next couple of months for your family to make an impact through serving. There is Operation Christmas Child, Turkey Roundup, Angel Tree, and Christmas Dessert Theater here at VGBC. Jimmy could always use more volunteers in the children's ministry. You could rake leaves for a neighbor, shovel snow for others in your neighborhood, invite neighbors over for Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner, or take some Christmas treats to your neighbors and extend an invitation to church. You could also go visit with some of the residents at one of our local nursing homes or take cookies to some of our widows and shut-ins at VGBC.  There are some great ministries in town to partner with such as Mission Medical Clinic, Crossfire Ministries, Mercy Gate, Care and Share, and Springs Rescue Mission.

More than being fired up about serving, my prayer is our students and our families will continue to be transformed into humble servants. This is one of the greatest ways we can have an IMPACT for Christ in our church, our neighborhoods, and our city.
